Did you make your resolution for the new year yet? How likely is it that you will achieve it? According to Time Magazine, the most commonly broken New Year’s resolutions are the following:
- Lose weight and get fit
- Quit smoking
- Learn something new
- Eat more healthfully and diet
- Get out of debt and save money
- Spend more time with family
- Travel to new places
- Be less stressed
- Volunteer
- Drink less
Surprised? I bet you’re not. Many of us commit to a self-improvement resolution around this time each year, but then forget about our goal as the months pass.
But you can really make it happen this year … with a little digital help. So step up to your New Year’s resolution, download these helpful apps, and stay on the ball in 2015!
Resolution: Lose weight, get fit, and live healthy
App Solution: Argus
There are thousands of fitness and health apps out there, but there is no other that combines this many features into one smart-looking app: Argus is your all-round fitness and health tracker. It keeps track of your motion, liquid intake, and sports activities, and compares your scores with those of your friends, adding the motivational factor to the game. Hands down, my favorite fitness app for 2015!

Resolution: Learn something new
App Solution: Wolfram Alpha
“Learn something new” is always at the top of my New Year’s resolution list, but I just keep moving it from year to year. Because I currently can’t find the free time to dedicate to those things I want to learn (like playing a new instrument or training in massage therapy), I have opted for a miniature version of my commitment. I select a random topic on Wolfram Alpha everyday to educate myself — at the bus stop, over lunch, or before going to bed. It takes 10 minutes, but gives me the feeling that I am doing something to keep learning. Hit the “random” button, and you’ll be surprised how much there is to discover!
Platform: Web, iOS, Android, Kindle, Windows

Resolution: Manage my money better
App Solution: Mint
When it comes to taking charge of your financial situation, there is no better app than Mint to help you get there. It wasn’t named “Best Personal Finance App” several years in a row for no reason.
Mint keeps track of all your finances, connecting your bank accounts, credit cards, and bill payments in one convenient account. View budget reports and see where your money goes every month. Even if money management isn’t one of your resolutions this year, get Mint!

Resolution: Change careers and find my dream job
App Solution: Good.co
If I were to award the title “most surprising app of the year,” I’d give it to Good.co. This app puts a new twist to the job hunt chaos. Instead of asking you to list your qualities and skills, you’ll be asked to take a series of quizzes, which help unlock your true personality in the form of various keywords. You can then go out and match these keywords with companies that are part of this app’s network, and find your true match!
It’s a great alternative to other quiz apps. You’ll get to know yourself better, and you might even land your dream job along the way!

Resolution: Improve my memory and mental sharpness
App Solution: Elevate
Did you know that you can improve your cognitive ability with brain training in much the same way you can improve your physical fitness with strength training? Elevate is an innovative app that helps you train the core functions of your brain: reaction, speed, attention, and flexibility.
Don’t think you’ll be forced to solve impossible math riddles! The key to Elevate is to expose you to simple yet effective mini games that help develop your brain in each area. In just a few minutes a day you’ll see progress.
Platform: iOS, Android

Resolution: Meditate and manage stress
App Solution: Mindfulness
Based on the meditation wisdom of MIT-trained scientist Jon Kabat-Zinn, MindApps set out to build a meditation guide that you could keep on your mobile phone. The Mindfulness app helps guide you through your meditation cycle and encourages you to embrace a more mindful existence. Just 10 minutes every day can help you better manage your life, overcome stressful situations, and become more aware. Personally, I wouldn’t go a day without this app.
Platform: iOS, Android
Price: $1.99
Resolution: Stick to the goals I have set
App Solution: Lift
If you have a more specific resolution you’d like to pursue in 2015, then I suggest you download Lift as your goal coach. Choose from a wide range of pre-set goals, and let the app help you reach them. Connect with the Lift community and motivate each other. Set reminders, celebrate every small achievement, and enjoy the feeling of having made it!
